Counseling Children

Counseling children takes a special kind of therapist because children often do not have the emotional vocabulary or capability to talk about their feelings.  We have worked with children and their families for decades, helping kids express themselves and helping parents understand the needs of their children.

Individual counseling with children starts with building a trusting relationship between the counselor and the child. Then, we move to vocabulary building; putting words to their feelings and understanding when they feel a certain way.  We use games and interactive play to achieve this.  The next step is teaching them to ask for what they need or want.  After a child can express their feelings and needs, we, as parents or guardians, can help them work through their feelings and manage their choices.

Please note: if your child says they are going to hurt or kill themselves or someone else AND they have a plan AND they have the means to carry out their plan AND you cannot get them to a Licensed Professional Counselor to help make an evaluation, call 988 or 911.

Counseling Adolescents

At SkyeHelps Counseling & Wellness, we love teenagers! We approach individual counseling with teens with the respect of realizing that they already know right from wrong. Our goal is to offer a space and relationship like no other they have experienced. A space where they can say anything in confidence without judgment or retaliation. We are here to help them access True Self and facilitate healing, growth, and identity.

Some adolescents have moments of overwhelming anxiety or depression due to the changes in their bodies, school, and social situations.  Those moments are perfectly normal. However, when a teen is experiencing days or weeks of unrelenting worry, sadness, or distress, it is time to seek professional help. In our experience, the sooner you seek help for those feelings, the easier it is to manage them.

Here are some signs that your teenager needs to see a therapist:

  • they are harming themselves or others on purpose
  • grades or behavior at school have gotten significantly worse
  • they experience constant and inappropriate worry, sadness, or self-blame
  • uncontrollable anger or crying
  • divorce or changes in custody
  • moving to a new place
  • death of a loved one
  • suicide of a friend or family member
  • crippling thoughts about government, religion, god, or the environment
  • anxiety about starting college
  • sexual identity or gender identity challenges
  • a medical professional, teacher, coach, or pastor has noticed something is wrong

Please note: if your teenager says they are going to hurt or kill themselves or someone else AND they have a plan AND they have the means to carry out their plan AND you cannot get them to a Licensed Professional Counselor to help make an evaluation, call 988 or 911.

Counseling Adults

Individual counseling with adults consists of a brief intake and a history of the client’s challenges and goals.  The best predictor of positive outcomes for patients is whether you like your therapist and you think your therapist likes you. With that in mind, we will spend a significant amount of time building rapport as we help you get to know yourself.

Adults generally can identify thought patterns that cause problems in their lives, and make conscious decisions to change the beliefs, which change the way we feel and behave.  Most individuals also enjoy having the comfort of unconditional positive regard and understanding that the therapeutic relationship extends.

Please note: if you know that you will hurt or kill yourself if you do not seek help AND you cannot get yourself to a Licensed Professional Counselor for an evaluation, call 988 or 911.
